Before you start spraying or fogging, it’s important to know the difference between cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting. The term “disinfectant” is the only term with a required minimum germ-kill rate, and is governed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Only EPA registered products can claim to be “disinfectants” on their labels. While the EPA tests these products for efficacy, they do not test the chemicals for safety, so it’s important to learn which ingredients are harmful and avoid them. An EPA registered disinfectant must prove in testing to kill at least 99.9% of the specific microbes it says it does within a certain “dwell time” (typically 10 minutes). The key to disinfecting is to ensure that you are covering the entire surface, so it needs to be clean of debris first. “High Touch” Areas Including Your Waiting Room
Objects and surfaces that are commonly touched by staff and patients are considered “high touch” areas. These include door handles, drawer handles, light switches, elevator buttons and cabinet knobs.
