With so many harmful chemicals in cleaning products, it’s really hard to find ones you can feel comfortable using around your family. Children and babies are disproportionately at risk from the toxins in cleaning products because of their smaller size and rapidly developing bodies, and these risks accumulate over time. We’re told over and over how important it is to clean, disinfect, and sanitize baby products like bottles and breast milk pumps and accessories, but the products we use to do it can be just as harmful (or more so) than the germs themselves. What you might not know is that Force of Nature, our EPA-registered disinfectant, sanitizing and cleaning solution, is your breast pump and accessory secret weapon! Read on to learn how you can use Force of Nature to clean and disinfect your breast pump, accessories, and more, without exposing your family to harmful toxins.
Our Top Tips For Using Force of Nature To Clean And Disinfect Your Breast Pump And Accessories.
1. Always Clean First!
Step one: rinse any breast pump parts that come into contact with milk with water to remove any residue. Cleaning is the first step before disinfecting. We go into much more detail in this blog post, but the net-net is that cleaning comes first (to get rid of any residue on a surface) and that gives the disinfectant the maximum contact with the surface, so it can eliminate 99.9% of germs.
2. Spray Accessories and Parts Thoroughly
Next, spray each accessory piece thoroughly with Force of Nature including:
- Breast Shields/Flanges
- Valves and Membranes
- Tubing
- Connectors
- Backflow protectors
You can also use Force of Nature to clean and disinfect many other baby products and feeding surfaces like:
- Bottles and nipples
- Pacifiers
- Teething toys
- High chair trays
- Car seats
- Stroller handles
And much more!
3. Clean Breast Pump Exterior
For your breast pump machine, spray a cloth with Force of Nature and wipe the exterior while it is unplugged, allowing it to air dry before use. Never spray any liquid onto an electronic device when it is plugged in!
4. Allow Accessories To Air Dry
All you have to do is let Force of Nature air dry before using or storing – no rinsing needed. Unlike many conventional cleaning products, Force of Nature leaves behind no harmful residues. Many disinfectant products contain harmful chemicals, including carcinogens, that can be absorbed through a baby’s skin – which has shown to be 10x more vulnerable to chemicals than adults.
Disinfectants are highly regulated, and any product that claims to kill germs, disinfect or sanitize is regulated by the EPA. The EPA requires rigorous testing with specified protocols to ensure that a product kills the germs that it says it does. Typically, you need to rinse disinfectants off surfaces before touching them (always check manufacturer instructions!), but Force of Nature requires no rinsing. It also earns the highest possible rating in the Mayo Clinic’s allergy safety rating system. It’s free from skin and respiratory irritants, and can even be used as a fruit and veggie wash!
Once dry, you’re ready to assemble your pump to use or store it.
A Note About COVID-19:
Force of Nature is an EPA-registered sanitizer and disinfectant that kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria and is on the EPA’s List N, the disinfectants approved for use against SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19.
